Spectrum Business Internet Pros & Cons

Wins and losses for Spectrum’s business internet plans are as follows:

Pros:

  • No contract
  • Money-back guarantee
  • 24/7 customer service for existing customers

Cons:

  • Asymmetric internet speeds (unequal DL/UL)
  • Not much fiber availability
  • Must pay for additional static IP addresses

Spectrum Business Internet plans compared.

All Spectrum Business Internet packages work best for small restaurants, businesses, or cafés that don’t offer free Wi-Fi. I’ll emphasize this as we make our way through this guide.

Spectrum Business Internet is cable/fiber hybrid internet. They use fiber cables to deliver your signals through the long haul. Then cable through the final mile (into your building).

You don’t get any benefits of fiber optic internet, which is pretty bad when considering the 1.0 Gbps internet plan’s price. AND the low upload speeds.

You should have enough download speeds to support your business’s online activities. For instance, 4 to 6 cloud-based point of sales systems will require 15/3.0 Mbps speeds (download/upload) [1].

Don’t bother with these plans if you frequently upload large files and value your time. It’ll take about an hour and a half to upload a 20 gigabyte (GB) file. Consider a different provider if you want the 1,000 Mbps plan and high upload speeds.

Important details for these plans include:

  • 30-day money-back guarantee
  • No data cap
  • Free modem
  • 99.9% network reliability

Unfortunately, you must pay for static IP addresses. That means addresses that won’t change.

You’ll only need static IP addresses when your external devices need to always know where to find your business’ servers. Businesses who host servers, call centers, and have remote employees will need these.

Whereas, restaurants, clinics, coffee shops, and every other business will not.You can deal with VoIP calls, online meetings, and email conversations without them [2].

Let’s dive into other features.

Charter Spectrum Business Internet Extra Features

In addition to the above features, you’ll get freebies like:

  • 100 GB free cloud storage backup
  • Web hosting & domain name
  • Up to 25 email address accounts to tie to your domain name

You’ll create and manage your website through Spectrum’s SiteBuilder application. It also gives you access to MySQL and FTP accounts.

It’s not necessarily a “feature,” but the following feature may prove helpful. The Spectrum Business Internet speed test gives you servers closest to Spectrum’s services. Thus, you’ll likely have more accurate speed tests.

You can access this now (for free) at spectrum.com/business/speed-test. But I felt obliged to mention it.

See other buy(able) add-ons.

Spectrum Business Wi-Fi

This add-on gives you a private business Wi-Fi network for your staff. This costs $7.99 monthly and gives you a Spectrum router and 24/7 support.

I recommend this option if you have a public Wi-Fi network and want to separate it from the network your staff uses. This feature is essential if you offer public Wi-Fi. Someone could weasel their way into your Wi-Fi network and penetrate it through public Wi-Fi.

The next feature may also add a bit of additional security to your network.

Malware & Spyware Scanning and Removal

All Spectrum Business Internet plans include the F-Secure security suite. It provides real-time protection against spyware, malware, and other online threats.

Unlike their residential internet, you CAN use this antivirus suite on Macs.

It comes with enough licenses for 25 devices.

I’ve seen mixed reviews of F-Security Business, yet I haven’t tested the software myself. I recommend consulting with a cybersecurity firm before relying on this software to keep you, your staff’s, and your customers’ data safe.

And the software’s supposed to keep you safe from spyware and malware [3].

Wireless Backup Internet

Get a system that’ll automatically activate and provide 4G LTE internet for $20 monthly during an outage. If you get Spectrum Business Internet, this feature’s essential.

Because you don’t want to lose your connectivity when dealing with important online activities. For instance, you’ll need 24/7 recording for cloud security cameras.

The device will provide internet for up to 8 hours after an outage and backup LTE data for up to 4 devices. It’s meant for offices with server rooms, security cameras, or other devices you need online.

However, you’ll get 10 Mbps download speeds. I couldn’t find the upload speeds anywhere.

Time to move away from features. Check out where their business products are available.

Spectrum Business Internet bundles compared.

The first 3 bundles prices last for 2 years. It’s a part of their 2-year price lock. The latter 3 have a 12-month price guarantee.

However, how much are their business internet bundles once 1 or 2 years pass?

Shrugs.

I couldn’t find any information. It appears it’s whatever price tag they feel like plastering on their product.

Despite my constant criticism of Spectrum’s business product, the first 3 bundles offer great value. Business TV works perfectly for firms or offices with waiting rooms. And I can even recommend offering people free Wi-Fi.

Because it’s not likely they’ll devour all your bandwidth.

The Entertainment and Game Time TV bundles are stellar plans. So long as you don’t offer free Wi-Fi. While I hate making this recommendation, it’s the only way to make these plans viable.

Otherwise, customers will congest your network and possibly make it difficult for your staff to deal with online activities. And since their Voice service relies on internet calling, or Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP), that’s bad.

Research suggests you’ll need at least 3.0 Mbps upload and download speeds to have clear VoIP calls [5]. And with the above upload speeds, you could have 3–11 calls running simultaneously.

That’s bad when dealing with pissed customers on the phone. Or when ordering products by phone for your store.

Spectrum Business Internet Deals

Spectrum will buy you out of a contract with your current business provider for up to $1,000 [6]. However, this specific buyout program doesn’t apply to Spectrum Mobile. To claim your deal, visit the link I typed and complete the buyout form.

Pay $49.99 monthly for 12 months when bundling the 300 Mbps business internet plan with Spectrum Business TV.

Whether you’re considering business or residential services, I discuss all current deals in a separate guide. See whether you find something you like.

On to finding ways to reach Spectrum’s support staff.

Spectrum Business Internet Customer Service

New Spectrum business customers must call 855-750-5002 Monday–Friday between 8 AM and 11 PM Eastern Time.

Existing customers will call 844-493-4458. Customer, billing, and technical support is available 24/7. However, from my experience, along with others’, Spectrum has a spotty customer service record.

Not the most helpful bunch of people.

Do You Have To Have a Business To Get Spectrum Business Internet?

Spectrum only specifies that you need a business name to get Spectrum Business Internet.

How Much Does Spectrum Business Internet Cost After 12 Months?

Spectrum does not say how much they increase their internet price after 12 months.

Wrapping Up

Spectrum Business Internet offers small businesses an affordable product with decent download speeds. However, their product falls behind competitors with upload speeds.

With lower upload speeds, it’ll take longer to upload files to cloud servers. And you may not have sufficient bandwidth to run many cloud-based security cameras. Or when dealing with VoIP, which is essential for modern businesses.
