I’m not a student, but I’m always searching for ways to save money. I’ve compiled all the resources I could on deals for students that Verizon offers.
To provide the most thorough guide on Verizon student discounts, I’ll cover the following:
- Whether they provide discounts for students
- Verizon Fios discount
- Verizon Unlimited plans and deals
- Other discounts you may find as a student
Let’s dive into some deals.
Does Verizon Have Student Discounts
Verizon can save up to $25 per month on Verizon Unlimited 5G plans. Verizon doesn’t have any Fios discounts for students.
Let’s dive into the discounts for Verizon cell phones first.
You can only get discounts on the following tiers:
- Welcome Unlimited
- 5G Start
- 5G Play More
- 5G Do More
- 5G Get More
Prepaid plans don’t qualify for the student discount.
I wrote “up to $25 per month.” You’ll get a $10 monthly discount for one line. And the $25 discount when you sign up for two lines. So you could see if you could split the bill with a family member or friend.
But you act as the account owner. Since you’re the student registering for the plan. Otherwise, you won’t qualify for the discount.
Verizon Student Discount Requirements
To qualify for Verizon’s discounted Unlimited student plans, you’ll need to remain enrolled in one of the following programs:
- Online school program
- Vocational school program
- Post-graduate program
- Undergraduate program
- Graduate program
You must also have two smartphones on a qualifying Unlimited plan. Accounts with three or more phones won’t qualify. Because this deal only supports around two lines.
And you’ll have to verify your status as a college student through a third-party provider (UniDAYS). I’ll cover more details on this in the following point.
The Verizon Unlimited discount only lasts up to four years [1]. And so long as you continue to meet their eligibility requirements.
How to Sign Up for Verizon’s Student Discounts
Visit Verizon.com/featured/students and select ‘Get Started.’
The site will redirect you to a different website known as UNiDAYS. It’s a website that helps students find discounted products or services. You’ll need to create an account with them and log in.
While creating your account, you’ll need to prove that you’re a college student. And you can do so through one of two methods:
- Provide your student email: ensure it includes “.edu” at the end
- Log into your school’s student portal through UNiDAYS
So long as UNiDAYS accepts your proof, they’ll redirect you to Verizon’s website. You may need to contact UNiDAYS’ customer service if you have verification issues.
And from there, you’ll either need to create a Verizon account. Or log in with the one you have. Remember, you must serve as the account owner to qualify for the discount.
It can take Verizon up to 10 days to validate your discount eligibility. So sit tight.
To check whether they’ve applied your discount, log into your Verizon account and click through each of these menu items:
My Verizon online > Bill > Bill overview
On the My Verizon app, tap through these prompts:
Main menu > Bill > Mobile
No matter which method you choose, look for the text “You saved XX in discounts.” You can click or tap ‘View details’ for more information regarding your discount.
Verizon Fios Student Discount
Verizon doesn’t have any student discounts or specialized plans.
This information can change at any time. Visit Verizon’s Fios internet deals page and check whether they added ‘Students’ on the page.
It may take up to a couple of months for this discount to appear on your account. Contact customer service if it takes more than 11 days.
You shouldn’t have to wait two months for your discount.
But play nice when you’re talking to their customer service team member. Perhaps they’ll feel more willing to help you if you’re friendly.
Verizon Unlimited Phone Plans
Here are the many Verizon Unlimited cell phone plans you can compare:
Phone Plan | Price | * Premium Network Data | After Student Discount (1 Line) |
5G Start | $35/mo. | 5 GB | $25/mo. |
5G Do More | $45/mo. | 50 GB | $35/mo. |
5G Play More | $45/mo. | 50 GB | $35/mo. |
5G Get More | $55/mo. | Unlimited | $45/mo. |
* Price doesn’t include taxes or other fees.
Imagine you get the student discount with two people on your account. Instead of paying $70 per month for two lines on 5G Start, you’ll pay $45 monthly.
That’s over 43% in savings.
Split the plan 50/50, and you’ll only pay $22.50 monthly for your Unlimited plan.
Verizon Prepaid Plans
Here are cellular Prepaid plans to consider if you don’t want Verizon Unlimited:
Phone Plan | * Price |
5 GB | $25–$40/mo. |
15 GB | $35–$50/mo. |
Unlimited | $50–$65/mo. |
Unlimited Plus | $60–75/mo. |
* These discounts include the $5 Auto Pay discount. They don’t include taxes or other fees that might incur.
You won’t qualify for the Unlimited student discount, but you can save money in another way.
You’ll only see savings when prepaying four or more months worth of your bill. Paying 4–9 months ahead will give you a $5 monthly discount. Meanwhile, over 10 months will give you a $10 discount.
Not prepaying for 10 months of the 15 GB plan would cost you $500. But if you prepay, you’ll only pay $350 (or $35 per month). A little over 35% in savings.
You’ll want to consider a Prepaid cell phone plan if you have little to no credit. Because Verizon won’t run a credit check. And you don’t have to worry about a contract.
That means you won’t have to pay an enormous $350 cancellation fee [2].
Anyway:
Prepaid data plans for mobile hotspots, tablets, and routers include:
Phone Plan | * Price |
5 GB | $40/mo. |
25 GB | $60/mo. |
100 GB | $80/mo. |
150 GB | $100/mo. |
* These prices don’t include taxes or other potential fees.
Add a Prepaid Data plan to your regular data plan and receive a $30 discount. For instance, a 150 GB plan costs only $70 per month.
Again, over 35% in savings.
This specific Prepaid data plan works if you use wireless hotspots and a regular Prepaid Data plan.
Verizon Wireless Internet Plans
If you’re searching for Verizon plans for internet, here are your options:
Fios Plan | * Speed (Download/upload) | ** Price (New Customer Price) |
300/300 | 300/300 Mbps | $49.99/mo. |
500/500 | 500/500 Mbps | $69.99/mo. |
Fios Gigabit | 940/800 Mbps | $89.99/mo. |
Fios Prepaid 100 Mbps | 100/100 Mbps | $39.99/mo. |
Fios Prepaid 300 Mbps | 300/300 Mbps | $59.99/mo. |
Prepaid Gigabit Connection | 940/800 Mbps | $79.99/mo. |
* These speeds may not reflect actual Verizon internet speeds. They can change due to varying circumstances like old routers, peak usage times, and other factors.
** These prices don’t include taxes, equipment charges, and other fees. They do include Verizon’s Auto Pay discount.
Most Verizon Wireless Fios internet plans give you symmetric internet speeds. That means you’ll have equal download and upload speeds.
Verizon also doesn’t have a data cap. No matter what plan you choose. So you won’t have to worry about paying data overage surcharges. Or additional fees for unlimited data usage.
The lack of these charges adds up to a fair amount of savings.
You do get some ‘discounts’, though. Just not on the internet.
The 300 Mbps tier gives you a $100 discount off a soundbar. Meanwhile, the 500 Mbps and Gigabit plans give you a $200 and $300 discount.
These usually cost over $1,000. Not something a good number of students will find helpful.
With the Gigabit, you’ll get Disney+ free for six months (over $48 in savings), 2 terabytes (TB) of cloud storage, a MoCA Ethernet Adapter, and a $50 Xbox eGift card.
I don’t find these deals useful. But you may use some of these services or products.
Speaking of. There’s one discount you could try to qualify for with Verizon Fios.
Verizon Lifeline Discount for Home Phone and Internet
Through the Lifeline government assistance program, customers could get up to a $20 discount on Verizon Fios Home Internet and Home Phone services.
However, you’ll need to qualify. Some of these qualifications include participating in programs like:
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
- Tribal assistance programs
- Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
- Medicaid
You’ll only need to participate in one of these programs to qualify.
Here’s a massive list of other programs you can take part in to get the Lifeline data and internet discount.
Wireless customers can get a Lifeline discount as well. But you must live in Wisconsin, North Dakota, New York, or Iowa [3].
When filling out the application for this government program, you’ll need to provide official documentation to prove you’re receiving the benefits these programs offer. A couple of examples include award letters and statement of benefits.
Ensure you copy these documents when providing them to the government. Because you won’t get it back. And you don’t want to lose your original benefits documents.
If you believe you’re eligible for the Lifeline discount, follow this link to Verizon’s Lifeline discount page and follow the steps to submit your application.
Other Verizon Wireless Discounts for Existing Customers (And New)
You’ll find various Verizon deals for new customers (and existing ones), such as:
- Accessory and phone deals
- Free streaming service subscriptions
- Automatic payment and paperless billing discounts
Verizon had a discount program called Mobile + Home rewards. It gave you a decent-sized discount when bundling Verizon Fios and Unlimited.
In On June 22, 2022, they removed the program for new applicants [4].
Verizon Phone and Accessory Deals
Verizon offers a $500 gift card for bringing your own phone into their plan. Or you can get up to an $800 trade-in credit when trading in certain phones. And as of now, Verizon offers up to 40% off select electronic accessories and free 2-day shipping.
For instance, you can get Samsung Galaxy Buds Live for $99.99. They’re usually $149.99. That’s 40% off.
Type Verizon.com/deals/products into your browser’s address bar and view their current accessory deals.
As for deals with Verizon Wireless phones:
When opening a new line with their Unlimited plans, you can get a free 5G phone. Like the iPhone SE 2022 ($429 value).
And if you trade in an older device, you could get an enormous trade-in credit. But it can’t have cosmetic damage or battery damage. Battery damage entails swelling, a phone that’s too hot to touch, or a battery that drains too quickly.
The amount you’ll get in credit varies by the phone you trade in.
Here’s an example. Sign up for a new line and trading in a Google Pixel 5a could get you an $800 credit toward a new phone.
And here’s a surprise I found.
If you get a phone through Verizon, they’ll give you AMC+ for a year (over $107 in savings). Getting AMC+ will give you a chance to catch up on series like Better Call Saul or Mad Men (my favorites).
Or it’ll give you a chance to introduce people to movies like The Terminator.
Switching to Verizon and trading in your old phone for an upgrade could save you a lot of money.
Free Streaming Services
Signing up for qualifying Verizon Unlimited plans can get you free Disney+ and discovery+ (Add-Free) streaming services for six months.
Qualifying plans include:
- 5G Start
- 5G Play More
- 5G Do More
- 5G Get More
Six months of discovery+ (Add-Free) would cost you at least $41.94.
The same number of months for Disney+ would cost over $47.94.
In total, you’ll save $89.88. And you’ll have access to all the Star Wars content you could dream of (from the latter service). The former gives you access to TLC, Animal Planet, HGTV, and other series.
So you can binge the various 90-Day Fiancé spinoff series.
You can still qualify for this deal if you’re already using these services.
Adding these streaming services to your plan requires similar steps. Follow these menu items through your My Verizon app or Verizon Wireless online account:
Account > Apps & add-ons > Disney+ or discovery+ > Enroll in “enter streaming service name here”
They’ll redirect you to either streaming website. Either sign in to your account or create a new one.
And there’s your discount.
Paper-Free and Auto Pay Discount
Enabling paper-free billing and Auto Pay features on your Verizon account can give you a $10 monthly discount.
You must enable both features and connect a bank account to Auto Pay.
You’ll get a $10 a month discount if you use these plans:
- Any Fios Home Internet plan
- 5G Get More
- 5G Do More
- 5G Play More
- 5G Start
- Welcome Unlimited
To enable Auto Pay, visit your Verizon account or My Verizon mobile app and follow these menu items:
Account > Bill > Auto Pay
And to turn on paperless billing, follow these pages:
Billing > Paper Free Billing > toggle on the box next to ‘Enroll’
Regarding automatic payments, you’ll select a date to pay your bill.
You may have to wait for one or two billing cycles for this discount to appear on your account. The wait is annoying and will add an extra $10–20 to your bill.
How It Compares To Other Student Discounts
Verizon Wireless offers some of the best cellular plan discounts for students. That’s if you also want to add internet to your bill.
However, when it comes to offering discounted student internet plans, Verizon fails in this area. So does one of their biggest competitors, Comcast Xfinity, AT&T, and Spectrum.
Cox offers discounts for K–12 students with their Connect2Compete plan. But you’re likely going to college. So you won’t qualify.
Internet service providers don’t appear to offer specific student plans. They all love to promote their low-income pricing. So that’s your best bet at getting discounted internet as a student.
Or by going with the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP). It’s like Lifeline, but it gives you a $30 credit ($75 if you live in qualifying Tribal Lands) toward mobile data and home internet bills.
