I’m Jon, a home networking expert. I’ve experienced every light on my Xfinity router and fixed most of them. And put together this guide to help you.

So, keep reading to learn precisely how to fix the red light on your Xfinity router.

What Does a Red Light on an Xfinity Router Mean?

A red light on your Xfinity router usually indicates a problem with the internet connection. When your Internet connection is down, there are a few potential causes.

And luckily, there are also a few potential fixes.

How to Fix the Red Light on Your Xfinity Router

Here is what you can do to fix the red light issue on your Xfinity router.

#1 Look for a Service Outage

Before you start troubleshooting, it is vital to check for service outages in your area. If Xfinity is down, there is nothing you can do to fix the issue. You will just have to wait for Xfinity to fix the problem on their end.

Login to your Xfinity account and check their Service Status Center page for outages

#2 Check Your Data Cables

Another potential cause of a red light on your Xfinity router is a loose Ethernet connection. To fix this, simply check all of the cables that are connected to your router and modem. Make sure that each cable is securely plugged into the correct port.

If you are still having trouble, you should try replacing the Ethernet cable connecting your modem to your router (if you have separate devices). Also, check the coaxial cable connected to the back of your modem (or modem/router combo unit).

If these steps don’t work, then move on to the next step.

#3 Restart the Router

If you have checked all the cables and everything seems to be plugged in correctly, the next step is to check the power supply. Unplug the power cord from your router (or your modem/router combo unit). Then wait for a minute before plugging them back in.

Try a different outlet too, just in case.

Once they are both plugged back in, see if the red light on your Xfinity router is gone. If it is, then great! If not, then move on to the next step.

#4 Check Your Modem

Only do this step if you have separate modem and router.

Another common cause of a red light on your Xfinity router is an issue with the modem (if you have separate devices).

But, if you have Xfinity-provided hardware, you will have a modem/router combo unit.

However, if you upgraded to a separate modem and router, you should also restart the modem. To do this, unplug the power source and wait at least 30 seconds before plugging it back in.

If restarting your modem does not fix the problem, you should try resetting the modem. To do this, find the small hole on its back and use a paperclip to press and hold the Reset button for at least 10 seconds.

Let’s say you identify your modem as the problem, and the red light problem keeps happening every now and then. In that case, you may want to replace it with a new one.

#5 Reset the Router

Note: this will erase all custom network settings, so take this into consideration before resetting your router.

If restarting your modem and router did not fix the issue, you may need to reset your router. To do this, find the reset button on your router. It is usually on the back or bottom of the device.

Press and hold the reset button for 10 seconds. This will restore your router to its factory settings.

Once the reset is complete, check for the red light. If it is gone, update your network settings (including your password, network name, etc.).

#6 Contact Xfinity Customer Service

If you have tried all the steps above and are still having trouble, you should contact Xfinity customer service. They will be able to help you troubleshoot the issue and get your Internet connection back up and running.

You can reach Xfinity customer service by calling 1-800-XFINITY or chatting with them online.

Conclusion

If your Comcast Xfinity router has a red light, it means you don’t have an Internet connection. To fix the red light, use the troubleshooting tips above.

If none of them work, contact Comcast’s customer service for support. However, they may not be able to fix it over the phone. In that case, they will send a technician.
