Encounter weather- or technical-related issues, and you’ll get an account credit reimbursed to your account [1]. You must contact their customer support within 72 hours of the outage to receive this credit.

They also offer a million (not literally) channel packages. More than other providers. I’ll compare these later in this guide.

DISH Satellite TV for RV

DISH allows truckers, RV owners, and those who love tailgating 2 options to watch TV on the go. Before covering these options, you must pay $379 (starting price) for the portable satellite dish and Wally HD Receiver.

From there, choose whether you want a prepaid package (Flex Pack) for $57.99 a month [2]. Or to pay $5.00 extra monthly to add it to your existing DISH Network plan.

The Flex Pack includes more than 50 channels like USA, MLB Extra Innings, and E!. It doesn’t have many sports channels. DISH makes it so you must get a separate sports channel package.

I’ll cover channel lineups in a bit.

Add DISH Outdoors (the RV package) to your current DISH package, and you’ll retain your current channel lineup.

Wally is a TV box that includes an infrared remote (IR). The remote’s signal will reach your TV regardless of whether walls are blocking it. A great way to flick off the TV if someone interrupts your sleep in your RV’s entertainment room.

Other than TV livestreaming services (e.g., YouTube TV), DISH Outdoors is the only viable way to watch TV while you’re mobile.

DISH Network Equipment

DISH Network doesn’t appear to charge a fee for non-DVR TV boxes.

The Wally includes additional features like:

• Built-in apps: Weather Channel, Pandora, & more
• Remote locator
• Dolby Digital audio support
• Parental controls

Every DISH package includes a Voice Remote Control. They integrated the remote with Google Assistant. Meaning the remote acts as a medium to manage your home’s smart devices.

Otherwise, DISH Network’s remote is a regular remote with no unique features.

The Hopper 3 DVRs have the following features:

• Record 16 shows simultaneously (requires Super Joey)
• Store up to 2,000 hours of content
• View Google Nest video doorbell on your TV
• AutoHop: automatically skips ads when recording

These act as the primary receivers for your home.

DISH has an excellent image showcasing how their DVR system works [4]:

The Joeys are separate DVR receivers. They’re suitable for multi-room DVR. Say you start watching football in one room. To watch it on your bathroom TV, pause the main television. Resume watching it while you’re doing your business.

There’s also the 4K Joey and the Wireless Joey. The former’s best for anyone with 4K UHD TVs. The latter’s better for reaching rooms you don’t want to run wires to.

The Super Joey enhances the Hopper. It allows your DVR to record up to 16 channels simultaneously.

Here’s another way to raise your DVR’s power level.

DISH TV Anywhere App

All TV packages include the DISH Anywhere app free. Stream it through your PC and the following app marketplaces:

• Apple App Store (iOS)
• Google Play Store (Android)
• Amazon app store (Fire TV Stick & Kindle Fire)

Watch all channels included in your DISH Network plan anywhere. It’s a great way to catch an episode of something if you’re traveling or bored at work. But be careful if you use mobile data. I’ll emphasize it in a second.

5 devices can stream content through this app simultaneously. I can’t find information specifying whether this includes devices at home or while traveling. Using the app on each device requires 500 Kbps (480p SD) or 500 Kbps (720p HD) download speeds [5].

Say you have a Hopper. Set up your hopper’s recordings and watch them anywhere. It doesn’t matter whether you’re online.

And I recommend downloading your content. Because streaming media will chew through cellular networks’ soft data caps quickly. Soft data caps are the amount of data you’ll use before encountering lower data speeds.

Let’s use Spectrum Mobile as an example. Upon exceeding their Unlimited plan’s 20 GB soft data cap, your internet speeds will lower to 1.0 Mbps (download) and 512 Kbps (upload). Counter these caps by downloading On Demand or recorded content.

Or use public Wi-Fi when accessible. Use protection, though. In my experience, using DNS resolver tools (e.g., Cloudflare 1.1.1.1), a VPN, and a portable router offered the most privacy and digital security.

None of the fees I have listed included taxes and other regulatory fees. These will vary by location.

DISH doesn’t charge a broadcast TV fee. But they charge a local channel surcharge. It’s the same thing. There aren’t any ways around this fee.

At the time of writing, DISH has no installation fee [10].

Viasat’s 12 Mbps plan would allow you to stream 1080p FHD content on 2 devices simultaneously. But the 40 GB soft data cap would allow your household to stream 15 hours of 720p HD content.

Those of you living in rural areas likely won’t have access to Frontier Fiber internet. Just their DSL plans. These offer 6.0–45 Mbps download speeds.

If you’re in a remote area and require internet, consider Verizon LTE Home internet. It’s cheaper ($50 monthly), doesn’t have soft- or hard data caps, and has higher download and upload speeds.

Truckers and those in RVs will do fine with DISH Outdoors and Verizon Mobile data. I cover this unofficial bundle more in a separate guide.

But you can’t bundle it with DISH. However, bundling DISH Network with Frontier and Viasat won’t save you money.

DISH TV plans include free installation, a 3-year price guarantee, and up to 2,000 hours of DVR content for new and existing customers.

They also offer discounts for various groups.

Military personnel and veterans get the Stars & Stripes pack ($10/mo value). This package includes the following channels [11]:

Seniors aged 55 and over also get a free movie rental per month. They’ll receive free DISH Protect Plus for 6 months [12]. Which helps protect your equipment.

When you need a technician to visit your home to replace equipment, this add-on prevents you from having to pay money.

Usually, these technician visits would cost $95.

Healthcare workers and teachers also get free monthly movie rentals. Then they’ll get the Heartland Pack free (worth $6.00/mo.). This package includes the following channels:

Get DirecTV for bundling and saving money for the first year. DISH TV works better for travelers and longer-term savings. It also has a superior DVR (regarding storage).

DISH charges more for the first year, but comes out ahead in year 2. DirecTV’s prices will increase to $102–$209 a month come year 2. Then you’ll need to pay an $11.99 regional sports fee with their Choice, Ultimate, and Premier packages.

If you feel like you’re not paying enough fees, don’t worry. DISH has a $12 local channels fee.

Neither provider charges an installation fee, though.

Regarding features. DISH offers a solution for RV owners, truckers, boat owners, and other travelers. DirecTV doesn’t.

Since AT&T owns DirecTV, customers can bundle their television and internet services. And you’ll get perks. Here’s an example.
