I want to find a provider who will provide the most value. That led me to write this review on Optimum’s various products.

Take the “Best For” column on the table with a grain of salt. Those numbers represent average low-bandwidth usage among folks in your home.

If someone frequently downloads files, you may want to upgrade from the 300 Mbps plan to the 500. Or 1.0 Gbps if you have the extra money.

Before getting a plan, figure out what your home usually does on the internet. Figure out how many devices you have running background tasks. For instance, phones or PCs constantly checking for automatic updates.

Yes, that uses data.

Their 5.0 Gbps plan isn’t available to many customers, yet. Just a couple pockets in New York and Connecticut. If the price point I found is true, then it’s more competitively priced per megabit than other providers with multi-gig plans.

Most homes won’t need 2.0 or 5.0 Gbps internet speeds. Unless they frequently download and upload massive files. Or manage home servers.

Optimum Data Cap

Optimum does not enforce a hard data cap on any of their internet plans. Your home can use as much data as you want.

Optimum Hidden Fees & Equipment

Additional fees for Optimum internet plans include:

The Network Enhancement Fee goes toward reinvesting into their network infrastructure. According to Optimum.

Optimum fiber customers will need an optical network terminal (ONT) instead of a modem. Though, it’s technically a fiber optic modem. Hence, the need for professional installation.

Optimum offers a free router with their internet plans at the time of writing. If this changes, you’ll want to consider buying a third-party router. We’ve listed a bunch of recommendations in a separate guide.

Optimum Wi-Fi Hotspots: What They Are & How to Connect

All Optimum internet customers have access to more than 2 million Wi-Fi access points throughout the United States. When accessing the SSID, log in with your online Optimum ID.

Forums suggest these hotspots offer up to 25 Mbps (download) and 10 Mbps (upload) speeds. You likely won’t see these speeds. Your rates will depend on how many others are using the network simultaneously.

The SSIDs are:

• optimumwifi: open public network
• optimum: secure public network using 128-bit encryption

I highly recommend using the secure public network. The public network will give a hacker or eavesdropper more chances to spy on your device’s activities.

To find these hotspots, use Optimum’s Wi-Fi hotspot map.

Optimum allows non-customers to access these hotspots for $4.99 a day. Or $0.99 if you’re using the GuestWiFi network from NYC Parks.

Log into optimumwifi by selecting the SSID and entering your account information.

The Optimum network will require a bit more work. iPhone users will have to tap an additional pop-up. It’ll ask you to tap “Trust” in the certificate window.

Android users will need to adjust their EAP Method and CA Certificate settings. Optimum has a tutorial on its website.

This list doesn’t include local channels. And it has a mixture of high-definition (HD) and standard definition (SD) channels. 

Optimum offers 4K UHD content through the Smithsonian Channel and Stingray Naturescape in their On Demand Library. Or head to channel 200. It plays 4K UHD sports games and special events.

You’ll need a 4K TV to watch the footage in UHD. Otherwise, you’re only watching it in 1080p FHD.

Like any other cable provider, they offer Video On Demand and Pay-Per-View. Content on these platforms will come with varying costs. Then there are channel add-ons.

Almost all packages allow you to subscribe to individual channels from each language type for $9.95 monthly. That’s helpful if, for instance, you watch 1 channel from Greek TV. But don’t want to pay $14.95 a month.

Broadcast Basic customers will have to pay $24.95 monthly for many of these plans. Instead of the above rates.

Optimum’s TV services come with a voice remote that has no notable features. It’s voice-activated. Tell it to find videos of teacup pigs on YouTube, and it’ll direct you to a search results page on the YouTube app.

The Optimum TV box includes many built-in apps like Netflix and YouTube. It also has a built-in DVR, 4K support, and access to your cable TV channels.

The CableCARD allows customers to use third-party TV boxes or DVRs with cable providers. If you have an existing and compatible cable box, you could pay much less for the Optimum cable box rental.

The regional sports and TV broadcast fees are unavoidable. They’re the consequences of going with cable television. Along with paying for TV boxes. The only way to avoid these fees, while watching live television, requires you to switch to live TV streaming service.

Like YouTube TV or DirecTV Stream.

You’ll incur a reconnect fee if you previously had the service, Optimum canceled it on you, and you need to reactivate it.

Optimum DVR Pricing & Features

You’ll first pay for the DVR service. Then, to store your recorded footage, you have to choose a cloud DVR storage plan.

4. Optimum TV App

The Optimum TV app is for Android and iOS operating systems and includes these features [3]:

• Watch live TV from anywhere with an internet connection
• Manage and view DVR recordings
• Use your device (e.g., phone) as a remote for your Optimum TV box
• Stream on up to 3 devices simultaneously

Not all features are available in every area throughout the U.S. Optimum doesn’t specify who gets what feature.

They don’t specify the internet speeds you’ll need to watch live TV on this app without buffering. For an extreme benchmark, I’ll use DirecTV Stream. They require 8.0 Mbps of bandwidth available per device [4].

At least have that amount of downstream bandwidth available when watching content on the Optimum TV app.

Optimum Coverage Map & Availability

Most of Optimum’s TV and internet plans are available in some areas throughout the following 21 states:

You could bring your own unlocked phone. So long as you pay $20 for a SIM card. Otherwise, they offer decent deals on their phones. I’ll talk about these in a bit.

Optimum does support eSIM for anyone possessing eSIM-compatible devices.

How to Get Started With Optimum

Whether your home has an existing optical network terminal (ONT), you’ll need Optimum to activate it. And if your home doesn’t have one, you must schedule an appointment for a technician to install one.

After setting up your ONT, you’ll plug your router into your Ethernet, coaxial ports, and power outlet. Upon powering on your router, test your internet speeds. Ensure you’re getting the speeds advertised on your plan.

Or at least speeds close to it.
